System Architecture: Scope of Work

project schedule

UDC reviews, designs, and updates the architecture for your new system through four primary phases. To do this, we review your current GIS architecture, gather non-functional requirements, and design your future GIS architecture. Other system architecture tasks include capacity planning and appropriate sizing, deploying infrastructure, and installing and configuring core ArcGIS software.

These steps ensure we establish secure, reliable, scalable, and modern system architectures that follow industry best practices for our utility clients.

Discovery Workshops and Requirements

To kick off the first task, UDC reviews your current-state architecture diagrams and system usage metrics. Reviewing this information helps establish a foundation for the GIS architecture discovery workshops. Prior to the workshops, we prepare a questionnaire and relevant materials for each type of system architecture that will be discussed.

After compiling the notes from each workshop, UDC creates a Requirements Traceability Matrix (RTM) based on your future-state requirements. The RTM documents both the functional and non-functional requirements identified during the discovery workshops and includes a gap analysis that compares the current GIS architecture with the future architecture.

System Sizing

UDC employs various industry tools, including Esri-developed tools, along with historical sizing data to apply load, monitor performance, and determine capacity and specifications. The sizing is based on expected user workloads and the physical locations of your users.

Architecture Design

Leveraging the RTM, UDC drafts diagrams or system views for the future-state GIS architecture design. We also prepare a preliminary system sizing based on estimated system loads. We work with your team to understand the expectations for lower environments and any limitations and factor those into the system sizing.

After confirming the design and sizing requirements, a system design review is conducted to discuss the next steps for your future-state system architecture. The project team then performs an initial data mapping exercise using your utility’s data model.

Using the information from earlier phases, UDC constructs the future GIS architecture design for cloud, on-premises, or hybrid deployment solutions.

Infrastructure Deployment

UDC provisions your hardware and cloud services.

Core Software Deployment

Beyond designing your future-state architecture, UDC installs and configures the core software of your GIS infrastructure.
