In 2017, UDC began work with our long-time client and partner, Sempra Energy, and business partner, Esri, on a 2-year Transmission Integrity Management Program (TIMP) – Gas High Pressure Enhancement project. The initiative is aimed at enhancing the high-pressure GIS applications used at SoCalGas and SDG&E to enable improvement for transmission integrity and safety management. Gas Geographic Information System (GIS) solutions provided through the project support system-wide user compliance, safety, emergency response and efficiency improvement project requirements.
The Sempra TIMP Enhancement project focuses on software development, integration, configuration and data model enhancements of the existing gas high-pressure GIS application which includes the recent ArcGIS Pipeline Referencing (APR) extension implementation by Esri Services and go live at SoCalGas. APR provides the GIS-based capabilities to perform pipeline linear referencing data management. The ArcGIS Pro extension is running in conjunction with Esri’s Utility and Pipeline Data Model (UPDM) at the Utility.
Leveraging ArcGIS Workflow Manager for Server combined with ArcGIS Workflow Manager for Desktop allowed SoCalGas to quickly develop and deploy solutions to support editing. Doing so required the APR implementation, since event editing must be done in the web and route editing must be done in ArcGIS Pro.
UDC worked closely with SoCalGas and Esri Services to assist with the productivity tools associated with the APR rollout. Many of the business workflows required creative application workflow to provide business needs, and customization was required to support the many-to-many relationships. By combining the UPDM Data model, APR, Workflow Manager for Desktop, Data reviewer for Desktop and Code Samples from Esri, a successful solution was realized. UDC provided productivity tools to promote the cohesion of all the Esri parts and technology working together that enriches the editor experience. These enhancements were enabled by Esri’s OOTB APIs and a set of UDC created custom frameworks, specifically built to enable SoCalGas standard business processes.
The integrity management program at SoCalGas is credited as contributing to Sempra’s receipt of the 2018 Enterprise GIS Award presented at the Esri User Conference in San Diego this past July. The award, given annually to organizations using GIS, recognizes pioneering uses of GIS technology. Sempra was given special recognition for their leveraging of GIS to provide safe and reliable energy services to more than 40 million consumers.
Headquartered in Los Angeles, SoCalGas serves 21.7 million customers throughout Central and Southern California providing natural gas as well as electricity from gas-fired power plants. SDG&E is a San Diego-based energy company serving both electric and natural gas customers in San Diego and Southern Orange Counties. UDC has been working with the Sempra Energy Utility companies on various GIS initiatives for more than 10 years.
Together with SoCalGas, UDC will present on the APR project at the 2018 Esri GeoConX meeting in Dallas. We invite you to attend the presentation or stop in our booth, #205, this November to talk in person.
