Dominion Energy Selects UDC to Evaluate UN Readiness for Virginia and North Carolina Subsidiaries

digital data concept

Dominion Energy Company Overview

  • Headquartered in Richmond, VA
  • Serves nearly 7.5 million customers in 16 states
  • 11,000 mi natural gas transmission
  • 6,700 mi electric transmission and over 58,000 mi distribution

Project Highlights:

Project Duration: 09/2022 – 03/2023

Objective: UN Readiness Assessment

UDC is excited to help Dominion Energy evaluate its migration readiness and determine the level of effort required to move its electric distribution data to Esri’s ArcGIS Utility Network (UN) for its subsidiaries, Dominion Energy Virginia (DEV) and Dominion Energy North Carolina (DENC). UDC will perform a robust data assessment for Dominion’s UN Readiness Assessment project, leveraging its in-house developed migration and automation tools throughout the process. The project launched earlier this month and will conclude in Spring of 2023.

Dominion Energy Goals

Consisting of eight major subsidiaries, Dominion Energy serves customers ranging across the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast regions of the U.S. Through this initiative, Dominion aims to determine its requirements for the UN and investigate its current technology and electric data readiness for DEV and DENC. Reviewing these will help the utility obtain critical information for long-term planning activities for its organization.

UDC’s Role

UDC will leverage its HEIDE migration tool during the UN data assessment to analyze the source data, assist in identifying areas where the data is not compatible with the UN’s requirements, and standardize the process of mapping, migrating, and configuring the electric data during conversion and migration. UDC will also conduct a UN data analysis by fully configuring a sample set of DEV’s and DENC’s electric distribution data. The results of both analyses will help determine the level of effort required to configure a complete source dataset for DEV and DENC as well as will be used to create a data readiness plan for the utility.

Following the data assessment, UDC will enable the UN model and configure an ArcGIS Pro environment – providing Dominion Energy the ability to experiment with its migrated data using the advanced network capabilities of the platform.
