Project Highlights

Project Duration: 04/2022 – 06/2024

Objective: Esri Network Management Implementation

Enbridge Gas has successfully implemented the ArcGIS Utility Network (UN) data model, incorporating its gas transmission and distribution assets for its service area in Utah, Wyoming, and Idaho.

Enbridge Gas (Enbridge), formerly Dominion Energy, collaborated with UDC and Esri to unify its gas distribution and transmission databases into a connected Utility and Pipeline Data Model (UPDM) and UN model, with ArcGIS Pipeline Referencing (APR) for transmission. Providing the foundation for an enterprise view of gas operations, the initiative enhances visibility into the utility’s compliance activities.

The Enbridge and UDC team collaborate during project workshops and sessions.

Enbridge Gas Goals

Enbridge’s legacy transmission and distribution assets were previously managed in two separate databases: the geometric network and the Pipeline Open Data Standard (PODS). Lacking connectivity at the regulator stations, tracing could not be performed from gate stations to meters nor could traces be conducted within the transmission environment.

Merging its systems into one platform and database is enabling Enbridge to perform these traces as well as advanced analyses and reporting for more efficient gas workflow management and pipeline safety support. This initiative further aimed to increase data integrity, enhance the user editing experience, streamline operations, and support enterprise applications.

UDC’s Role

For the UN Upgrade initiative, UDC developed the application functionality prototypes, included four tiers of subnetworks, performed data migration and cleanup tasks using automation and UDC tools, upgraded the integration points, implemented ArcGIS Workflow Manager, developed custom tools and scripts, and rebuilt/upgraded Enbridge’s legacy tools in the UN model.
