Utility Network Migration: Business Case

utility professionals

We understand that meeting the demands of a modern, digital utility can be challenging. To support your transformation and organizational goals, UDC’s Utility Network Migration Solution offers a full suite of tools and frameworks to jump start your Network Management project planning and implementation. We have invested in the development of proven processes supported by advanced productivity tools that better enable the full capabilities of the ArcGIS Utility Network model for your utility. By leveraging our in-house auto-migration tool, HEIDE, in conjunction with our UDC Toolkit for ArcGIS Pro, we help automate all stages of your transformation – from planning to assessing and migrating.

HEIDE is short for High-Fidelity Export Import Data Exchange. A unique tool within the industry, HEIDE enables migration from any GIS platform (Schneider Electric ArcFM, Esri, and Non-Esri) to Esri’s Advanced Network Management platform with a greatly reduced timeframe while offering the capability for high-fidelity data migration either immediately or in the future as needed.

HEIDE streamlines the migration process by creating the asset package and loading it into the new network model as well as by automating 90% of the data mapping, data cleansing, reconciliation and normalization, QA/QC, containment, and advanced configurations. In addition to performing migration tasks, the tool also provides a highly automated method for testing and checking your data for compatibility with the Utility Network model, ensuring your existing GIS data can be leveraged to its fullest in the new platform.

Why High-Fidelity?

What do we mean when we say High-Fidelity…In reference to utilities, high-fidelity simply means how precisely we recreate and visualize what is in the field within your GIS. Esri’s Utility Network model provides the capability to organize your GIS for more inclusive use in downstream applications through its streamlined service approach.

Electric Utilities

On the electric side, that means better support for instituting and maintaining an Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS) as well as enabling its highest value applications.

  • Perform operations analysis like FLISR (Fault Location Detection, Isolation, and Service Restoration), VVO (Volt-VAR Optimization), and SOM (Switch Order Management)

Gas Utilities

On the gas side, vital information can be passed to Enterprise Asset Management (EAM), supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), and Spatial BI systems and applications contributing to your safety management programs. The new network model will provide support for tracking, traceability, and verifiability as well as support for building advanced logic for corrosion management and management of gas pressure areas.

Water Utilities

For water, complete subnetwork data in the Utility Network model enables utilities to manage and analyze their data based on the different areas designated by the supply and regulating features. Leveraging the advanced tracing functionality, utilities can perform traces from the isolation zone system valves out to the extent of the locations that could be isolated by any potential shutoff – meaning quicker response times and more streamlined communication from the operations team.

Incremental Migration Support

HEIDE offers the capability to keep your data in synch with the Utility Network model until you are ready to go live with the migrated system. By supporting a parallel Utility Network system, HEIDE enables utilities to leverage their Utility Network data in downstream applications while continuing with daily production work in their legacy editing environments. This approach empowers organizations to transform at their own pace with continued operations and production, allowing for strategic planning as well as preparation time for full implementation.

Intelligent Automation and Intuitive Migration Support Tools

With HEIDE and UDC’s Toolkit for ArcGIS Pro, your utility can take full advantage of all the new data model constructs Esri’s Network Management platform has brought to the market for modern grid and gas pressure system management while reducing the migration lift for your organization. Our solution is adjustable to match how you plan to use your data in ArcGIS Pro and the Utility Network model.

Validate Your Migration

Rather than just doing a simple feature class to feature class migration, HEIDE analyzes the source data, using a library of sophisticated and proven techniques. Going one step further, HEIDE also performs a robust Utility Network data analysis, providing you with a proof of concept prior to full migration. This report evaluates your data at a deeper level to show how your utility’s individual data would truly function in the platform and the areas where data resolution is required.

Leveraging these two reports, we create a data readiness plan with options and actionable steps for preparing your data for full migration.

Automate Your Configurations

One of the most taxing migration activities for utilities includes manually performing the configurations. HEIDE intelligently configures and migrates your data for you so that it is ready to drive the Utility Network’s advanced functionality when loaded into ArcGIS Pro. This capability of our tool significantly accelerates your migration timeline and takes the burden off your utility while also ensuring high accuracy.

Gain Deeper Insight into Your Data

UDC Toolkit for ArcGIS Pro, a growing group of custom add-in tools based on the needs of our clients, can be leveraged to analyze your data in various ways as well as help with automating data cleansing activities. UDC’s Toolkit also provides the opportunity to experiment with your utility’s data using tools designed for your unique processes and workflows in ArcGIS Pro and the Utility Network model. This hands-on experience helps prepare your users for the transition and allows for continual refinement of your implementation requirements as you learn more about the capabilities of the new platform.

UDC’s Toolkit maximizes your GIS investment by empowering you to improve your data completeness and fidelity and enhance your specific workflows.
