Project Highlights

Project Duration: 12/2024 – 09/2027

Objective: Data Maintenance Records Management

Washington Gas is teaming up with UDC on a data completeness and currency project. For this initiative, UDC is updating the utility’s gas transmission, landbase, and proposed gas main assets in the Smallworld GIS to accurately reflect the corresponding real-world assets. UDC is working closely with Washington Gas’s Corporate Engineering, Company Mapping, and Company Records departments on this multi-year project.

Project Goals

UDC is assisting Washington Gas with maintaining its GIS data to ensure compliance with the public service commissions in Virginia, Washington D.C., and Maryland, and with FBI requirements for ‘safety sensitive’ areas within the utility’s service territory.

By updating the transmission network and new business data – landbase and proposed mains – for system planning, design, permitting, and construction, Washington Gas aims to improve the efficiency of its downstream business processes, ultimately reducing utility costs. Additionally, ensuring data currency enables downstream operations to utilize and analyze the most up-to-date information.

UDC’s Role

To update the transmission assets in the GIS, UDC is leveraging the as-built drawings and field notes from Washington Gas’s document management system. The assets being updated include pipes, valves, valve boxes, and regulator stations. Each pipe segment may contain between 80 and 150 attributes for review and update, including pressure test information.

UDC is utilizing the site plans and drawings provided in the work management system for mapping the new business work. This work involves updating the landbase features and proposed mains as per the new business requirements.

The landbase, proposed mains, and transmission network jobs are tracked in Washington Gas’s document and work management systems, with updates made in the Smallworld GIS within 3 to 5 business days.
