UN Data Assessment Program: Success Stories

team collaboration concept with fistbump

As one of Esri’s leading business partners in the Energy and Utilities Industry, UDC is one of only a handful of organizations certified to analyze and migrate your data to the Utility Network platform. Because the Utility Network is significantly different from other platforms, migration to the new platform may require enhancements of your utility’s data to fully take advantage of advanced features and functionalities.

Our Data Assessment Program was launched based on our experiences with Utility Network data migration projects for Avista, Dominion Energy Ohio, and several other projects currently underway. Our Utility Network experience has helped our clients successfully reach their migration and data quality goals.

  • Avista’s Journey to the Utility Network

In the first step of Avista’s Esri Utility Network transition, UDC’s HEIDE tool was used to fully auto-migrate Avista’s gas transmission and distribution data from the current geometric network model to the Utility Network platform for its entire territory.

“The UDC team has been a great partner for Avista on this first leg of our multi-year journey toward the Utility Network. The team has been flexible in their approach, listening to Avista’s needs and using their expertise to respond with creative solutions. UDC helped Avista navigate the complexities of both the data model and the applications. UDC has been an advocate for making enhancements that will not only benefit Avista but also other customers on their journeys to the UN.”

Michal Littrel – Manager, Engineering Technical Services Avista

  • Leveraging the Cloud at Rochester Public Utilities

In the discovery phase of migrating its current water and electric data to Esri’s Advanced Network Management platform, Rochester Public Utilities (RPU) is using the cloud to assess the migration readiness of the utility’s data and systems for both commodities. As part of the assessment, UDC migrated complete UN datasets to ArcGIS Pro, configured sample subsets of electric and water subnetworks, defined RPU’s data needs for UN model alignment, and helped the utility understand the migration lift for its specific organization through a detailed data readiness plan.

“The thorough Utility Network readiness data assessment has provided us with clear, actionable steps to implement that will yield a smoother UN migration.”

Ryan Moore, Manager of Geographic Information Services at Rochester Public Utilities

  • Dominion Energy Ohio’s Gas Migration

For Dominion Energy Ohio’s Esri platform migration, UDC’s HEIDE tool is being used to fully migrate DEO’s transmission and distribution gas data from the current GE Smallworld platform to the Esri Utility Network platform and Utility and Pipeline Data Model (UPDM). UDC is also deploying Esri’s ArcGIS Pipeline Referencing (APR) solution for DEO’s transmission gas data.
