Unified Enterprise GIS Roadmap: Success Stories

team collaboration concept with stacked hands

Over the course of our career, we have worked collaboratively with multiple gas and electric utilities to create specially designed enterprise roadmaps that fit our clients’ particular requirements. We have helped our clients understand the general approach in technology adoption of utilities similar in size, ensure future investments harmonize with company vision and build upon a relevant and supported stack of technologies, extend GIS investments across organizations for maximum benefits, and align future investments with industry best practices and best-in-class solutions.

Additionally, we have provided technology roadmaps for our clients beginning and in the course of their migration journeys to Network Management (ArcGIS Utility Network). Designed at various stages of the migration process, our roadmaps allow our clients to choose the best approach for their utilities, determined from analyzing their current technology capabilities.

We have successfully provided CORE Electric Cooperative, Eversource, ENMAX Power, Ameren, Pasadena Water & Power, and many others with strategic roadmaps designed to help them reach their individual, enterprise goals.

CORE Electric Cooperative logo

CORE’s ADMS Initiative

UDC first partnered with CORE Electric Cooperative (CORE) to develop a roadmap for prioritizing and deploying the utility’s ADMS and DERMS integrations and technologies as the first step in the organization’s overall modern grid management strategy. UDC continues to be actively engaged in CORE’s journey to full ADMS implementation, supplying further planning, preparation, and consulting services.

These grid modernization initiatives are helping CORE reach its long-term goal of a fully connected electrical distribution model for more reliable power and safer conditions for its members and communities served.

Eversource’s Electric and Gas Enterprise GIS Roadmaps

Our engagements with Eversource for its electric and gas roadmaps funded the moving and consolidation of the GE Smallworld and Schneider Electric ArcFM/Esri GISs to a single Esri Utility Network GIS. We provided additional business releases to address how the following could be improved: compliance, operations, EPP, Engineering, operational awareness communications, and customer service.

Electric Enterprise GIS Strategic Implementation Plan

To modernize its grid in Massachusetts and Connecticut, Eversource required a roadmap for improving its GIS technology and business processes to support a real-time ADMS. For our part in this effort, UDC developed an integration roadmap with a business release schedule that consolidated the Massachusetts’ GIS into an Enterprise GIS solution, allowing Eversource to maximize its GIS investment and enable an enterprise solution for the entire company.

Gas Enterprise GIS Roadmap

To support the new mega rule and materials traceability in Eversource’s Massachusetts and Connecticut territories, UDC developed a roadmap to aid the utility in meeting gas compliance standards.

ENMAX Power’s GIS Strategic Roadmap

In partnership with Esri Canada, UDC worked with ENMAX Power to define its business and technology requirements, create a future state model, and develop an implementation plan. Since creating the GIS Strategic Roadmap, UDC has been involved in initiatives to deploy the defined solutions.

Ameren’s Field and Grid Enhancements

Ameren has recently embarked on a five-year roadmap with digital field and grid initiatives aimed at improving reliability, safety, and customer and employee experiences. UDC is aiding Ameren in fulfilling these initiatives by providing implementation and consulting services. Our solution includes using UDC developed tools – Digital Utility® DyAN™, Digital Utility® Feeder Sentinel™, HEIDE, Digital Utility® Gas OMS, and Gas Compliance Manager®.

Pasadena Water & Power’s Journey to GIS Modernization

PWP is looking to develop and modernize its existing Esri ArcGIS and Schneider Electric ArcFM GIS environment. Under this scope, UDC is performing a roadmap and readiness assessment for a comprehensive five-year roadmap to deploy ArcGIS Pro and modern viewing applications and integrations. This roadmap includes migrating PWP’s Esri-based geometric network data model and applications to the Utility Network, enabling PWP to remain fully supported by Esri and Schneider Electric.
