UDC is working with utilities to enhance Tracking and Traceability workflows with advanced capabilities for streamlined, accurate record keeping and reporting to support the ability to track assets by barcode and GPS, and derive material, size, manufacturer, model, or known attribute. One such solution being developed builds on Esri ArcGIS Collector and ArcGIS Survey 123. Solution Architect, Feichi Shih, has created several screencast videos to walk you through our solution progress. She highlights primary functionality enhancements that automate as-built information collection in the field, support automated pipeline editing and improve analysis capabilities.
Adding Station Points using Survey 123
The Tracking and Traceability solution workflow starts in Collector where the user spatially identifies their desired work area by selecting it on the map. When the user selects the station to be added, edited, or removed, a Survey 123 window automatically opens using a specially configured connection enabling this functionality. The Survey 123 form is prepopulated with date, time and the location information generated by the user’s GPS. By entering or scanning the material barcode into the UDC developed decoder field within Survey 123, the survey form is fully populated with the corresponding component information decoded from the barcode such as manufacturer, lot number, production date, model, material, diameter, and wall thickness.
Viewing Pipeline Edits within GIS
Once edits have been made and the user synchs their device back to the server, they can be viewed within the Collector application. A geoprocessing service creates the pipe segments within GIS using the provided barcode information and GPS point association from Survey 123 and displays it within Collector. This functionality removes the need for GIS users to manually create or manipulate pipelines and helps to ensure data accuracy.
Custom Views with ArcGIS Web AppBuilder
Further visualization can be provided through the use of Esri ArcGIS Web AppBuilder dashboards for custom reporting and views. The Web AppBuilder dashboard is configured to show summary statistics details such as the number of stations added per day. Users can view materials list or removal details for components and mainline. In addition, they can easily export this data to a CSV file for sharing and review outside of the GIS.
Work Assignment Considerations
One note when considering this specific Collector and Survey 123 solution, there is a need to tie the overall solution to a work or mobile management system for work assignment purposes.
